Roberto Balconi

 

Milan-born Roberto Balconi studied in his home town and in England. His repertoire runs from mediaeval to contemporary music, with a special predilection for the Baroque period. He has worked with such groups as the English Baroque Soloists, Il Giardino Armonico, Il Complesso Barocco, The Consort of Musicke, Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, Venice Baroque Orchestra, Ensemble Aurora, Il Concerto Italiano, La Cappella della Pietà dei Turchini, L’Europa Galante and Capella Savaria, and he has performed at the most important international early music festival and opera houses under the direction of Gustav Leonhardt, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Marc Minkowski, Robert King, Alan Curtis, Rinaldo Alessandrini and others. For several years he has been active not only as a singer but also as a conductor, especially with the Fantazyas ensemble, which he founded in 2000. He recently appeared at the Felicia Blumenthal Festival in Tel Aviv and in the Musica e Poesia a San Maurizio series in Milan. His conducting repertoire includes Handel’s “Chandos” Anthems, Bach’s choral motets, Domenico Scarlatti’s and Pergolesi’s Stabat Maters, and Handel’s opera Ariodante. He has been teaching baroque singing at the Accademia Internazionale di Musica in Milan since 2004, and he has built up a noteworthy catalogue of recordings for such companies as DG Archiv, Virgin Classics, Harmonia Mundi France and Opus 111, among others.
