Vincent Godel

Born in Geneva in 1977, Vincent Godel studied piano before switching to the bassoon. In 1996, after having graduated from high school, he entered Kim Walker’s class at Indiana University’s School of Music (Bloomington, USA), where he received a Performer Diploma in 1999. He went on to study with Daniele Damiano at Geneva’s Conservatory, and in 2001 he was awarded the "1er Prix de Virtuosité" and a teaching diploma, as well as – a little later – the orchestra diploma in Alfonso Venturieri’s class. He has since played in various first-rate orchestras (often as first bassoon): Zurich’s Tonhalle Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Opéra de Lyon orchestra, the orchestra of Venice’s Teatro La Fenice and the Bern Symphony Orchestra. In 1999 he was invited to play first bassoon at the Pacific Music Festival in Japan under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas; there, before an audience of 4,000, he participated in an outdoor chamber music concert with first-desk players from the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2002 he became principal bassoon of the Orchestre de Chambre de Genève, and in 2003 he took up the same position with the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, with which he has also appeared as soloist. Since 2007 he has been teaching contrabassoon at Bern’s Hochschule der Künste.
