Fryderyk Chopin

Fantasy-Impromptu in C-sharp Major/minor, Op. 66

The Fantasy-Impromptu in C-sharp Major/minor, Op. 66, was the first of Chopin’s works to have been published after his death, by Julien Fontana. The first known draft of this short piece dates from 1835 and is untitled; a second version, completed in January 1849, is called, simply, Impromptu: thus the title Fantasy-Impromptu that Fontana gave it at the time of its publication must be considered arbitrary. Chronologically, the Impromptu, Op. 66, is the first of the four impromptus that Chopin composed. The piece has a tempestuous first section (Allegro agitato), based on the efficacious juxtaposition of the two themes, of which the second is lyrical and dreamy; this is followed by a middle section (in D-flat Major) that is also bi-thematic in structure; and finally, the recapitulation of the first section is followed by a long, well-developed coda.
