Friedrich Gulda

Prelude and Fugue

The Austrian composer and pianist Friedrich Gulda was a highly eclectic musician, open to the most varied influences. Although he won the Geneva Piano Competition when he was only sixteen years old, his interests were not limited to classical music: he also turned his attention passionately and competently to jazz, which he performed with such musicians as Chick Corea and Cecil Taylor. As a composer, he often attempted to blend classical and jazz elements, and the Prelude and Fugue (1971) – a piece clearly inspired by the great Bach tradition and often performed by Gulda in concert – is an important one in the catalogue of his works. (In 1972-73 Gulda made a significant recording of Bach’s complete The Well-Tempered Clavier.)
