Ludwig van Beethoven

Trio in D Major Op. 70 no 1 "Geister-Trio"

Beethoven’s two Trios for Piano, Violin and Cello, Op. 70, dedicated to Countess Erdödy, were composed in the summer and autumn of 1808 and were first published in Leipzig during the autumn of the following year. The Trio in D Major– the first of the pair – is undoubtedly also the better known one. Like many of Beethoven’s other works, it is known by a subtitle that was not of the composer’s invention but that is in general use; nor is the origin of the “Ghost” epithet clear. It would seem, however, to have been derived from the characteristics of the slow movement, Largo assai, which is full of deeply disquieting tremblings – quite different from the two fast movements, Allegro vivace e con brio and Presto, which are diametrically op- posed to it and almost festive in nature.
