Robert Schumann

Blider aus Osten, Op. 66
Arrangement for clarinet, cello and piano by Marek Denemark

After the youthful Eight Polonaises, written in 1828 when he was only eighteen years old, Robert Schumann waited nearly twenty years before composing another work for piano, four hands. In 1848 he published Bilder aus Osten (Images from the East), Op. 66, a collection of six short impromptus inspired by a reading of the Arab poet Hariri, whose works Schumann had come to know and like through a German translation edited by Friedrich Rückert (author of the texts of Mahler’s famous Rückert-Lieder). These six pieces – in which oriental-type melodic inflections appear only fleetingly and from time to time, are being performed today in an arrangement for clarinet, cello and piano by Marek Denemark.
