Ludwig van Beethoven

Sonata in F Major for Violin and Piano. Op. 24

Beethoven wrote the Sonata in F Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 24, in 1800-01 and dedicated it to Count Moritz von Fries. The work is known by its nickname, “Spring”, which is perhaps derived from the beautiful and truly spring-like first theme of its opening Allegromovement. It is certainly not by chance that the first movement, with its fluid lyricism and the elegant balance in the dialogue between the two instruments, constitutes the most significant segment of the entire composition from the artistic point of view. Relatively more traditional – although not lacking in moments of great inspiration – are the intense, concentrated Adagio molto espressivo (the thematic material of which is clearly pianistic) and the final Rondo – Allegroma non troppo, whereas the vigorous, energetic Scherzo – Allegro molto, with its out-ofsynch rhythms, is highly individualistic.

1. Allegro
2. Adagio molto espressivo
3. Scherzo (Allegro molto)
4. Rondò (Allegro ma non troppo)
