Witold Lutoslawski

Variations on a theme by Paganini

The Variations on a Theme of Paganini date from 1941, when Witold Lutoslawski was devoting most of his time to performing in Warsaw’s cafés in a duo with Andrzej Panufnik. The theme is that of the twenty-fourth Caprice – the same one successfully used by many other composers. The writing is faithful to the original and often limits itself to making specifically pianistic transpositions and transcriptions of the eleven variations that Paganini himself had superimposed on the theme.
