Igor Stravinskij

Concerto in E-flat Major "Dumbarton Oaks"

The Concerto in E-flat Major, "Dumbarton Oaks", was the first tangible creation born of Stravinsky’s encounter with the musical world of the United States. Robert Woods Bliss, an American patron of the arts, commissioned the Russian composer to write the piece to celebrate his thirtieth wedding anniversary; its world premiere took place privately on 8 May 1938 under Nadia Boulanger’s direction at Bliss’s estate, Dumbarton Oaks, near Washington, D.C., and the name has been applied to the composition ever since. Originally, the concerto required a small chamber orchestra. The "Dumbarton Oaks" Concerto is structured in three short movements, and it sufficiently illuminates Stravinsky’s neoclassical style, which in this instance was meant to restate – in a distorted but affectionate way – some typically Baroque usages and rhythmic pacing.

1. Tempo giusto
2. Allegretto
3. Con moto
