Fryderyk Chopin

Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21

The Concerto in F minor, written in 1829-30, is in fact the first of Chopin’s two concerti, but because the composer temporarily mislaid the manuscript, it was published as Concerto No. 2 – and with the opus number 21 – in 1833, some time after the Concerto in E minor (written in the spring and summer of 1830). The concerto follows the classical, three-movement form rather freely and is generally considered less accomplished than the Concerto in E minor. But its strong point lies in the middle Larghetto movement, written in an enchanting melodic vein: it opens with the subdued tones of a nocturne but becomes more animated in its tense, dramatic middle section.
