Fryderyk Chopin

Concerto n.1 in E minor, Op. 11

The orchestra is always treated with great discretion in the Concerto in E minor, Op. 11. It is given the first movement’s long introduction, but thereafter it is restricted to accompanying the soloist; and it has correctly been said of the last movement that “one barely notices that [the orchestra] is there.” Of the slow movement, Romanza, Chopin himself said that it should be “like a dream by moonlight in the beautiful springtime.” The final Rondò vivace was clearly inspired by Polish folk music. The Concerto in E minor was triumphantly performed for the first time in Warsaw on 11 October 1830, with the composer as soloist and under the direction of the Italo-Ticinese musician Carlo Soliva.
