Fryderyk Chopin

Andante spianato and Grande polonaise brillante, Op. 22

The composer’s output for piano and orchestra came to an end with the Grand Polonaise, Op. 22 (summer and autumn of 1830), to which Chopin added, in 1835, an atmospheric Andante spianato for solo piano, by way of introduction. In its final version, the composition follows the model that had already been attempted with success in the Krakowiak, even if in this case the Andante spianato – so dreamy and imaginative in character – makes up, in a sense, for the less incisive Polonaise in E-flat Major, which is rather ornamental, and supported by a bare-bones orchestration.
