Isaac Albeniz

Evocación, Triana (from Iberia)

Born in Camprodón, Catalonia, in 1860, Isaac Albéniz was, initially, one of the most celebrated pianists of the second half of the nineteenth century, admired as a soloist in Europe and the Americas. At first, his musical output was entirely geared to his needs as a soloist, and it was characterized by its bright and sometimes mannered Spanish style. Only after Albéniz had given up performing and moved to Paris, in 1893, did his music become more thoughtful and take on a more direct, highly personal individuality. In Paris, thanks to fertile contacts with the most advanced European musical tendencies, Albéniz gradually developed a style in which folkloric elements reappear within a concept of harmony that had taken in the most original aspects of Impressionism and that reached its apex in the four books that comprise Iberia (1905-1909), correctly considered to be the composer’s masterpiece.
