Olivier Messiaen

Les offrandes oubliées, Méditation Symphonique pour Orchestre

Les Offrandes oubliées dates from 1930 and is an early work by the French composer Messiaen. This symphonic piece, is subdivided into three parts that delineate a short text written by the composer himself. Christ has sacrificed himself for human beings, but human beings, driven by madness, are wallowing in sin. Jesus’s love, as expressed in the Eucharist, which constantly renews His sacrifice, has been forgotten. The first part – “The Cross” – functions as an introduction and introduces a long, motionless melody in the strings. It is interrupted by the unexpected rhythmic explosion of “Sin” (Lively, ferocious, desperate, gasping), a tense, dramatic piece that is not lacking in references to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. This in turn gives way to the final part, “The Eucharist” (Extremely slow, with great pity and great love), which extinguishes itself in a delicate pianissimo.

1. La croce (Molto lento, doloroso, profondamente triste) 2. Il peccato (Vivo, feroce, disperato, ansimante) 3. L’Eucaristia (Estremamente lento, con una grande pietà e un grande amore)
