Henryk Wieniawski

Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22

Wieniawski composed his Concerto No. 2 in D minor, Op. 22, in 1862 and dedicated it to Pablo de Sarasate; it was published in 1870. The piece is in classic the orchestra is treated with a degree of refinement with respect to timbre, especially in the introduction to the first movement – an Allegro moderato in which vigorous initial ideas alternate with more lyrical passages and with sections that require great virtuosity of the soloist. Following a brief cadenza, the Allegro moderato leads into the Romance, Andante non troppo, which is full of pathos and completely dominated by the solo violin. The last movement, Allegro con fuoco, Allegro moderato (à la zingara – gypsy-style), alterns series of quick, staccato sixteenth-notes with moments of typically gypsy-like lyricism.

1. Allegro moderato
2. Romance (Andante non troppo)
3. Allegro con fuoco - Allegro moderato
