Märchenbilder Op. 113

The Märchenbilder, Op. 113 (Fairytale Pictures), were composed in a short period of time, from 1 to 4 March 1851, and they are absolutely to be considered one of Schumann’s compositions in which classical form – although it has been evaded – seems to be winking like an unfulfilled desire. Indeed, although their form is freer than that of the sonatas, the Märchenbilder cannot in any way be thought of as four separate pieces with no relationship among them: the four pieces’ key relationships (they are in D minor, F Major, D minor and D Major, respectively) are obvious, even if the movements’ order (Moderato-Veloce- Veloce-Lento) is atypical in comparison with classical sonata organisation. Moreover, the four pieces are very tight-knit in form: with the exception of the fourth, they last under four minutes each.
