Dimitri Shostakovic

Five Pieces for two violins and piano (arr. by Levon Atovmyan)

Dmitri Šostakovic’s music has often been transcribed and arranged. Such practices are completely legitimate, assuming that listeners understand that what they are hearing is partly the work of the composer whose name it bears and partly that of the person responsible for the transcription or arrangement. The Five Pieces are to be ascribed to Lev Atovmyan (1901-73), a musician who worked with Šostakovic in drafting his film scores, and they are free arrangements of pieces drawn partly from the first and third Ballet Suites and partly from two soundtracks composed by Šostakovic in the 1950s.
