Muzio Clementi

Sonata in G minor Op. 50 No. 3 "Didone abbandonata"

Born in Rome in 1752, Muzio Clementi moved to England when he was still a child, thanks to Sir Peter Beckford, who undertook to educate him at his own expense at his residence in Dorset. Clementi quickly became an incomparable piano virtuoso, and he managed to explore the instrument’s technical and expressive resources. His musical output was mostly written for his own use and also with an eye to the constantly growing music publishing industry, of which Clementi became a participant and protagonist by making himself into a publisher. The three Sonatas for piano, Op. 50, dedicated to Luigi Cherubini, were published by Clementi himself in 1821. The most famous sonata in the collection is surely the third, in G minor, which is also the only one among Clementi’s piano compositions that bears a programmatic subtitle by the author – clearly inspired by Pietro Metastasio’s drama of the same name.

1. Largo patetico sostenuto - Allegro ma con espressione
2. Adagio dolente
3. Allegro agitato e con disperazione
