Maurice Ravel

La Valse

La Valse was completed in April 1920 in a version for solo piano. Immediately therafter Ravel made an arrangement for two pianos out of which he created the celebrated ochestral version. In the version for piano La Valse calls for extreme virtuosity. It is a long Viennese waltz, but its nature is intimately dramatic, swept over by a fatalistic anguish that permeates its every fibre - an immense whirlwind of sound without a moment’s let-up, leading, one might well say, to real catastrophe rather than to a predictable final apotheosis.
