Ludwig van Beethoven

Allegro ma non troppo, from the Symphony No. 9 in D min. Op. 125 (transc. by Franz Liszt S. 657)

Liszt, like most other composers of the Romantic generation, had a true veneration for Beethoven, and this manifested itself through (among other things) his piano adaptations of all nine symphonies; these were made in 1863 and 1864. The purpose of these transcriptions or arrangements was not only artistic but also educational, at a time when the occasions for hearing a symphonic work in its original form were extremely limited; the vast public of music lovers therefore had to be satisfied with adaptations for the most varied instrumental combinations, which publishers happily offered in abundance. Liszt had already made a personal arrangement for two pianos of the Symphony No. 9 in D minor, and this version, which dates from 1851, bears the catalogue number S. 657.
