Valse-Scherzo Op. 34

Tchaikovsky originally wrote the Valse-Scherzo, Op. 34, for violin and orchestra. Composed in 1877, the piece was dedicated to Josif Kotek, a young violinist who was much admired by the composer – although the world premiere was performed by Stanislav Barcewica in Paris on 20 September 1878. The Valse-Scherzo may be considered a sort of preparatory study for the Concerto, Op. 35, which Tchaikovsky completed in 1878. Although it was never popular as a concert piece, it is relatively better known in the version for violin and piano that the composer himself arranged.
