Max Bruch

Kol Nidrei Op. 47

It comes as no surprise, then, that one of Bruch’s other well-known pieces, the Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, Op. 47, like the Concerto in G minor, has many free-form characteristics. Composed in 1881, Kol Nidrei was dedicated to the cellist Robert Hausmann. Bruch makes use of the melody of the Hebrew prayer of the same name, which initiates the sacred service on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The piece is very free, almost rhapsodic in nature, and it gives plenty of room to the cello’s melodic outpourings, which are heartfelt and full of noble, severe pathos.
