Works

Sergey Rachmaninov

- "Polichinelle" (from "Morceaux de fantaisie" for Piano op. 3)
- Presto (n. 4 from "Moments musicaux" op. 16)

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s six Moments Musicaux, Op. 16, have very little in common with Franz Schubert’s works of the same name. They were composed in 1896 and published shortly thereafter. No. 4, Presto, in E-flat Major, requires great virtuosity; it is pervaded throughout by an irresistible internal dynamism, and it can be considered a sort of study for the left hand, which has the most difficult part, whereas the right states a dramatic, forceful theme. Polichinelle, on the other hand, is one of the Cinq Morceaux de fantaisie, Op. 3, written in 1892; another one is the extremely famous Prelude in C-sharp minor, which quickly became one of the Russian composer’s most beloved and most often-played works. Polichinelle, in F-sharp minor, is perhaps the most original piece in the whole set, and its rhythm is clownish and effervescent.
