Johannes Brahms

"Ziegeunerlieder" (Gypsy Songs) op. 103

The collection of Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs), Op. 103, composed in 1887 and published with great success by Simrock in 1888, includes eleven settings of Hugo Konrat’s German translations of traditional gypsy texts. Brahms wrote the songs upon returning from a trip to Hungary; he made use of an anthology of love-songs that had recently been published in Budapest. In these eleven pieces, which are not interconnected either musically or poetically, Brahms paid his final, nostalgic tribute to the gypsy world to which the violinist Reményi had introduced him nearly forty years earlier, and which remained an ineradicable memory for him.
