Fantasia-Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 56

Tchaikovsky composed his Fantasia-Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 56, between June and October 1884 and dedicated it to Sophie Menter, a pupil of Liszt. It was not by chance that he dedicated it to a Liszt pupil, be it for the score’s highly virtuosic nature or for its wholly atypical structure, which was influenced by the rhapsodic style of Liszt’s concertos. The piece is subdivided into two separate sections, Quasi rondò (Andante mosso) and Contrastes (Andante cantabile); the latter also includes the finale as such. The Fantasia-Concerto was first performed on 6 March 1885, in Moscow, with Sergei Taneev as soloist.

1. Quasi rondò (Andante mosso)
2. Contrastes (Andante cantabile - Molto vivace - Vivacissimo - Allegro moderato - Vivacissimo - Molto più tranquillo - Vivace)
