Mikhail Glinka

Sonata in D minor for Viola and Piano

During the years of his “apprenticeship”, Mikhail Glinka (1804-57) wrote various instrumental and chamber works. The first movement (Allegro moderato) of the Sonata in D minor for viola and piano was written in 1825; Glinka was twenty-one years old at the time and he had little musical experience behind him. Nevertheless, he managed to write a sonata-form movement that, despite several ingenuous details, already showed his talent and originality clearly. Three years later, in May 1828, Glinka added a much more professionally-written second movement (Adagio) to the composition, whereas the third and final movement – a rondo – unfortunately never got beyond the sketch stage.
