On August 22nd, 1911, a startling and sensational event made front-page news all around the globe. The Gioconda, Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, had vanished from the Louvre, removed by mysterious and surreptitious hands. Surprise and disbelief were the immediate reactions to such an upsetting event; in an attempt to quickly retrieve the painting the French police immediately instigated a massive man-hunt. However, after the initial enquiries, they were soon forced to face the evidence: the Gioconda and her cunning abductor had dissolved in thin air. Finally, two years later, Leonardo’s canvas was finally retrieved and the thief arrested amongst general astonishment. The mastermind behind the theft of the century was none other than Vincenzo Peruggia, a simple whitewasher from Dumenza, a small village in the Varese region. Peruggia migrated to Paris at the beginning of the century to look for work and had managed to mock the Suréte, the famous French police. Piecing together the intriguing story behind the theft of the Gioconda, the documentary retraces the locations that served as back-drop to this unique event. The testimony of the life of the man, who became famous as the thief of the Gioconda, is narrated by his daughter. In vivid details she recounts all the stage of the theft up to the discovery of the painting. The narrative unearths previously unreleased details of an affair which became a matter of concern for the Government while keeping the spotlight on the personality of the thief and his sinister motives which, to this day, hover over this page in history.
