| The development of new building technologies, over the past few years, has seen a spectacular resurgence of timber as a viable construction material. Similarly, the growing interest for this material, on behalf of architects and engineers, has ensured a great leap forward for wood-based architecture and its consequent popularity. In Switzerland there are numerous examples of buildings constructed with wood, utilising new technologies. These are not just private, one-storey homes, but also larger constructions that are several floors high such as schools, gymnasiums and ice skating rinks. Many of the new timber designs integrate power and fuelling systems that are sensitive to ever-growing ecological needs. Hence, these innovative buildings set new standards for environmentally conscious living-spaces. In this documentary engineer Natterer and architect Zumthor, both pioneers of timber construction in Europe, talk about their vision, concepts and work. We hear about the experiences younger architects as well, and are exposed to many examples of new buildings which were realised in timber. |
