From Bellinzona to Zurich or Basle in half an hour or from Geneva to St. Gallen in under one hour? Not science fiction, but the simple promise of the protagonist of this film. Its name is Swissmetro, a new means of high-speed, underground transport that could turn Switzerland into one big city. The idea advanced by an engineer of the Swiss railways over 20 years ago has become a concrete project which is currently being examined by the Department of the environment, transport, energy and communications before authorising the construction of a pilot section between Lausanne and Geneva. This documentary shows a virtual reality journey at over 500 km under Switzerland to calculate how long it would take, understand how this new means of transport would really work, and how much it would cost. |
