| Puppet Strings: The Threads of a Story unfolds like a winding path, starting out from distant roots. It peers into a most interesting current cultural and artistic phenomenon: the life and works of the puppeteers of the Compagnia Marionettistica Carlo Colla and Sons of Milan. Balancing reality and nostalgia, Leonardo Colla plots the path of the ancient art of theatre-making based on baroque and 19th century codes, and develops cultural, philosophical and theatrical topics, which he incorporates into his shows. This prestigious group has succeeded in safeguarding the dignity and thoroughness of a show which is mistakenly considered to be the sole domain of children. The protagonists of this story are Carlo III Colla and Eugenio Monti Colla, the last working descendents of a dynasty, which remained a top-of-the-bill attraction for over half a century at Milan’s Teatro Gerolamo. This theatre is the only one in Europe built especially for marionettes in 1868. Memories of places and characters from the past alternate with present endeavours, as current success mixes into future plans, always with the same strict discipline acquired in their childhood years |
