| Pensions: a sick joke. The story of no fewer than 220,000 Italian men and women who, after working all their lives in Switzerland, retired to their native land
An agreement between Italy and Switzerland, in force until 2002, stipulated that Italian workers could return home after 35 years’ service to enjoy their well-deserved old-age pension. The arrangement therefore allowed them to retire before reaching the pensionable age applicable in Switzerland, and guaranteed them a full pension under Italian law. But that is not what happened: once they had returned and their pension contributions had been transferred, the trap closed: their pensions were recalculated and effectively cut by two-thirds! After a long legal battle, and thanks only to a favourable ruling by the European Court of Human Rights, some of them have now been partially compensated. |
