The conversion

Target: family
Version: Italian, French
Length: 85'
Year of production: 1985

The last few years have brought about a new kind of mysticism in different countries: the number of sects and prophets has increased substantially. This phenomenon is hardly noticeable except for occasional scandals which go into the head-lines as in 1978 with the collective suicide of Jim Jones’ followers in Guyana. “The Conversion” deals with one such case of “conversion” in a well-to-do family. When he returns from a business trip a man notice his wife’s unusual behaviour. At first he suspects an affair, but then realises that she has joined a strange religious sect. Her case is not unusual, the spectator will learn as he meets parents of other converts. The couple splits. A father kidnaps his own daughter. Members of the sect blindly believing their chief’s vision of the end of the world, flee on the mountains. In the end, even if they have to be rescued by helicopters, their faith remains unaltered. The movie deals with a complex phenomenon and many questions remain unanswered. Spiritual and idealistic visions of the world? Refusal to go along with a society which has no acceptable values to offer? Or imitation, submissiveness, fear of responsibilities, rejection of reality?
