Mosul Year Zero

After a battle that left tens of thousands of people dead, Mosul in Iraq has been liberated from ISIS, but at a terrible price: buildings in ruins, houses gutted, churches and mosques blown up, thousands of bodies still buried under the rubble, hundreds of thousands of refugees living under canvas. The great city on the Tigris in northern Iraq, a cultural jewel and cradle of the great civilizations of Mesopotamia, has become a symbol of the struggle against islamist extremism and the tragedies it has spawned.
