The impossible awakening

A serious incident, massive brain damage. Until a few years ago, there was no hope. Today, major progress in medicine has led to better prospects. Patients survive but spend months, or often years, in a “vegetative” or “minimally conscious” state. Some can just about move their eyelids; all need 24-hour assistance.
