Unwelcome tourism

Tourism jacks up prices and leads to a dumbing down of shops, restaurants and culture generally. And worse: in Europe’s most visited cities, there are districts from which residents are being ousted; the visitors can pay rents that locals cannot afford. This is especially true of Venice and Barcelona, where residents are now mobilizing to demand that tourism be kept within bounds.
