Ryan Gardner appende i pattini al chiodo

Dopo vent'anni passati sulle piste di tutta Svizzera Ryan Gardner ha deciso di appendere i pattini al chiodo. Lo ha annunciato lo stesso giocatore con una lettera aperta. "Ci ho pensato molto - ha scritto - ma poi ho deciso di comunicare il ritiro dallo sport che amo". Il giocatore di origini canadesi ha poi aggiunto: "Crescere in Svizzera e avere la possibilità di rappresentare questo paese è stata una delle cose che più mi hanno riempito di orgoglio in tutta la mia carriera. Non vi ringrazierò mai abbastanza".

Figlio del leggendario Dave Gardner, il 39enne di origini canadesi ha esordito nel massimo campionato elvetico a vent'anni con la maglia dell'Ambrì. Nel 2001 il passaggio al Lugano, con cui ha poi vinto il titolo nel 2003 e nel 2006. Si è laureato campione svizzero anche con lo Zurigo (nel 2008 e poi trionfatore in Champions League nel 2009) e con il Berna (2013), con cui ha pure conquistato la Coppa Svizzera tre anni fa. Nel 2016 il ritorno alla Resega, dove ha dunque giocato gli ultimi match di una carriera eterna e ricca di soddisfazioni, che l'ha visto scendere sul ghiaccio in 857 partite del massimo campionato con 249 reti e 331 assist totali.

Ha pure indossato la maglia rossocrociata in 59 occasioni (21 gol e 13 assist), partecipando a tre Mondiali (compreso quello dello storico argento del 2013) e alle Olimpiadi di Sochi del 2014.

After much thought and contemplation, I have decided to officially announce my retirement from the game that I love. I would like to thank the owners, managers, training staff, coaches and all the players that I played with over my career. I was blessed to play hockey for many years and it has given me many great memories and friendships, which my family and I will always cherish.

I would like to thank the fans for the support they showed towards me and their respective teams. Their passion for hockey is amazing and their support was very much appreciated. I want to wish all the teams and players the best of luck for the rest of the season, and especially the Swiss National team for the upcoming Olympics. Growing up in Switzerland and being able to represent this great country was one of the proudest moments of my career. Enjoy the experience.

I would like to say a special thank you to my family who sacrificed so much over the years so that I could follow my dream of playing hockey. I would especially like to thank my wife and kids for all of their love and support through this amazing journey. The memories, experiences and friendships that I have from my hockey career will always hold a special place in my heart. I look forward to the future as I know it will include hockey is some way and hopefully Switzerland as well. I can’t thank you all enough.
